Urdu Poetry

Urdu Poetry
Urdu poetry is a rich tradition and has many different types. Urdu poetry is generated from Persian and is an important part of Pakistani and Indian culture. If we see its history of literary figure it was started from Kabir (1440-1518) and even Amir Khusro (1253-1325 AD) and later famous poets were Meer, Dard, Ghalib, Mustafa Meerza, Anis, Dabeer, Josh, Jigar, Iqbal, Zauq, Jauher, Faiz, Firaq, and Allama Dr. Syed Ali Imam Zaidi Lucknawi. After Pakistan came into being many famous poets were residing in Pakistan. Urdu poets have produced a large number of poetic works.
Urdu poetry has different forms:
  • Ghazal, is infact a short love lyric.
  • Qasida, a kind of ode, often a satire and a poem dealing with an important event.
  • Nazm, Urdu nazm is an important part of Urdu poetry. Some Famous nazm writers were Josh, Firaq, Iqbal, Farhat Ehsas, etc.
  • Masnavi, in majority of cases a poetic romance. It may extend to several thousand of lines but normally it is too shorter. Some Masnavis deal with ordinary domestic and other occurrences, Sauda and Mir wrote some of this kind.
  • Marsiya, is read always on the death of Hazrat Imam Hassan (R.A) and Imam Hussain (R.A), but sometimes on the death of relatives or friends.
  • Tazkira, is often a mere collection of names with a line or two of information about each poet. On the other hand it may be the history of Urdu poetry.
