Best Urdu Novelist—Ashfaq Ahmed


Ashfaq Ahmed (1925-2004) was a famous broadcaster, playwright, writer and spiritualist from Pakistan. He was regarded as the best Urdu Afsana writer. He completed his Masters in Urdu literature from Government College Lahore. Bano Qudsiya, his wife also one of the best novelists of Urdu.
After partition, when Ashfaq Ahmed reached Walton refugee camp with other migrants he use to make announcements on a megaphone around the clock. Later he got job in Radio Azad Kashmir, then he got lectureship at Dayal Singh College, Lahore. 
After this, he went to Rome to join Radio Rome as an Urdu newscaster. He also used to teach Urdu at Rome University.In 1962, Ashfaq Ahmed started his popular radio program, Talqeen Shah which was more popular among villages and town’s people. In 1966, he was appointed director of the Markazi Urdu Board, later renamed as Urdu Science Board. He remained with the board until 1979.
Ashfaq Ahmed used Punjabi in Urdu and introduced a new kind of prose, which was unique to him. He got President’s Pride of Performance and Sitara-i-Imtiaz for excellent literary work. He did a lot of work in Urdu some of them are:
  • Band Gali
  • Aik Hi Boli
  • Nangay Paon
  • Aik Muhabbat So Afsanay
  • Aik Muhabbat 100 Dramay
Ashfaq Ahmed died on 7th of September 2004 at the age of 79.
